Mr Mr Au Chi Ho, The author of a new book 'Up Where We Belong' mentioned this place. He and his team took quite a load of recent aerial photos. This location was mentioned in page 128. From the shape of the ruin it looked like one of those pre-WWII observation posts with Lyon lights to me.
They had been using remote control planes with mounted camera to take the photos. What a project.
It is highly likely. Actually if you zoom into the extreme you should be able to see what's left of the walls. The shape looks like a typical squre + half a globe. I have not been there so it would be a bid difficult to tell from the satallite photo. I wonder what would be Rob's suggestions.
Just checked out the 1:10000 maps in Hong Kong Maps Service online search. The location is marked as a ruin very close to the bluff. There is also another ruin (a bigger building) slightly down from the battery. This buildingis not visible in the photo. However the boundary of it could still be seen under Google Map or Google Earth. This might be some sort of a bunker.
From the position shown on Google, I would expect the object to be one of two searchlight shelters associated with the two nearby batteries. Concrete pathways lead from both positions back to Pottinger Battery area, although one has been partly covered by a landslip. The other building mentioned is the remains of the searchlight engine room. The engine room generally held an engine for each light, plus another smaller one for backup. They drove generators to supply electricity for the lights, which could be remote controlled. A smaller building attached to the engine room contained circulation tanks for cooling fluids for the engines.
During the Q & A session of Mr Ko's talk last month, a volunteer group reported the foot path to the Pottinger Battery as well as this serach light post had been cleared. The foot path is sort of just a dirt path with crude steps at some stages, however it is currently free of weeds and bushes.
