May Ride, nee Witchell, comes from an old, established Hong Kong family. In 1933 she was Secretary to the Dean of Medicine at the University of Hong kong, and later private Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor. Also a member of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Force, she was interned by the Japanese during the Second World War.
