A correction to my previous statement. (see Joanna, granddaughter of George Frederick Hutton Potts). Frederick Hopper Wallace was my GREAT GRANDFATHER. He was father to Esme (aka Dolly) Stuart Wallace, wife of George Frederick. I have the family bible which is encribed "To Esme on her wedding day" from her mother-in-law (Jemima Cameron nee Cumming, married to Lipton Hutton Potts). Also, please note that the surname "Hutton Potts" is correctly spelled WITHOUT a hyphen. I also have both family bibles: one which records ALL the children of Lipton Hutton Potts, AND the other in which all George Frederick (including his second middle name "Cumming) Hutton Potts; 3 sons are enscribed.

The little I know of Frederick Hopper Wallace is that he was born Dec 1848 in Stepney, London, UK. He married Emily Buyers 11 April 1878 in Shanghai and that he died 1926 in Shanghai. I have not been able to find any other information on him. They had 8 children including Esme (aka Dolly) Stuart Wallace, wife of my grandfather George Frederick Cumming Hutton Potts, who was born 07 December 1887 in Kensington, London, UK. I do not know when he relocated to Shanghai nor have any other facts about him.

Thanks David, I do know about the 2 websites you mentioned and have checked them out. I was able to glean some small information from them but am unable to find (other than your Gwulo website) any information at all on my British family living and working in China (Hong Kong).

I spent the day at the UK National Archive on Friday, and took the chance to look at the will mentioned above, their ref: FO 917/2708. Here are the main points.

Cover:

  • To whom made: Edith May Cheetham (in the will called Edith Cheetham)
  • Place of Residence: Shanghai China
  • Place of Death: do    do 
  • Occupation: Master Mariner (retired)
  • Date of Will: 20th February 1926
  • Date of Death: 31st March 1926
  • Date of Grant: 5th May 1926

Value of Personal Property: 32,137.94 taels, or 4778 pounds, 16 shillings, 11 pence

Deails of will:

  • "Edith Cheetham, of Shanghai aforesaid, widow" appointed the executrix of the will.
  • 6,000 taels to "my daughter Joyce Wallace of Shanghai aforesaid Spinster"
  • Residue of estate to "my daughter Madeleine Emily Pym, Widow"

On 13 February 2016 via Ancestry I was contacted by a cousin I never knew existed (her grandmother is Joyce Wallace). This person lives only a 2 hour drive from me! Also, through this new found cousin we have discovered 2 additional cousins,  one in Baltimore, Maryland USA (her grandmother is Claude Wallace). My grandmother Esme nee Wallace is their great aunt. Also, another cousin on Emily Buyer's side of the family who lives in England.

My cousin said Frederick Hopper Wallace was baptised WALLIS but changed his surname to the current spelling. Possibly when he married Emily Buyers, however, currently we don't have the exact date of the name change.

We plan on getting together this summer to share family stories, photographs and get to know each other.

From one of my newfound cousins I received a photograph this morning of Claude's marriage, however she didn't know the names (other than her father Frederick Hopper Wallace, Esme and Claude) of the people in the photograph. I have been unable to find anything on Ancestry about Claude or her spouse. The photo also has my grandfather George Frederick Hutton Potts standing on Esme's left. Could you, Annelise or someone find a newspaper article on the wedding? It took place 17 April 1920 in Shanghai and the receiption I believe was held at "Erroll".

Not sure if it is relevant to the Wallace family story but the name "Hutton Potts" stuck a chord.

In the 'At the Peak' book by Paul Gillingham there are couple of 1930s pictures of Alec Hutton Potts and one of a child, Peter Potts

George Frederick C HUTTON POTTS is my grandfather (he married Esme WALLACE). The child "Peter" (possible real name Patrick born about 1931) is probably Alexander Hutton Potts' son by his wife Susannah Weill. Other than what I have found on this website I have not been able to discover anything about the Weill family.

The nickname "Peter" seems to be one that the Hutton Potts used in place of the given name "Patrick". My father's son by his first marriage to Julia Wikes was also called "Peter". Only late last year was I able to discover that his real name is Patrick Cameron H P.

My Dad (George Ronald Hutton Potts) NEVER spoke about his father.  I have only learned about my father's family in the past 2 years, and then only because my husband accidentally found the book "The Quest of Noel Croucher: Hong Kong's Quiet Philantropist" on the internet. If it hadn't been for my husband discovering that book, to this day I would still NEVER know anything about my father's family or their lives. I attempted to contact the author Vaudine England but she never responded.

It has been through the kindness of people: yourself, David, Annelise and others sharing tidbits of information that I have been able to assemble a potrait of the fascinating person my grandfather was. I never had the privilege of knowing him as he was dead long before I was born (in Canada), nor did I ever get to meet Esme my grandmother. Only once did I get to meet my Uncle Jack Y Hutton Potts and then only briefly.

Thank you for your reply. I am hoping that my new found 2nd cousin in Boston, USA (on the Wallace side of the family) can shed some light. She hopes to be able to make a trip out to British Columbia, Canada this summer so we can get together.

You may find closer to home that Vancouver University libraries has original copies of North China newspapers.

A friend resident in the city has over the years managed to send me copies of material I have an interest in extracted from these newspapers.
