John Jupp left Hong Kong in early 1911 to live in Bromley, Kent, UK; he and his family appear on the UK census taken on 2 April that year. He ran the London office of J.D. Humphreys & Sons. His mother Emily was the younger sister of J.D.

His correct dates are: born 8 December 1871; died 24 October 1948.

His elder son John Edmund Jupp (1901-42), having started his working life in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, joined J.D. Humphreys in the early 30s. When war threatened he joined the Hong Kong Royal Naval Reserve and was captured after the defence of the Repulse Bay Hotel. He survived the sinking of the Lisbon Maru, but only just, dying at Osaka no.2 camp, Kobe, on 12 August 1942. He now rests in the |Commonwelath War Cemetery at Yokohama. Born three years later to his sister Stella Mary, I was named after him.
