As usual, the pillbox was built on the old shoreline. In this case, the shore of Kellett Bay.
The bay has been reclaimed, and is now the site of the Wah Kwai Housing Estate. The estate took its first residents in 1990, so the reclamation will have been before then.
I took a walk around the back of the estate, but there is no sign of the pillbox. The hillside slopes have been cut back as part of building the estate, so I guess the pillbox was demolished at that time.
More about the area...
- Wikipedia : Kellett Bay (Chinese: 奇力灣), or Kai Lung Wan (雞籠灣) is a bay at the southeast of Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. The hill above the bay was a Chinese public cemetery with Victoria Road linking with the north side of the island. In 1960s, the cemetery was replaced with Wah Fu Estate.
- This court case mentions that the landfill used for the Kellett Bay reclamation came from a hill appx 1Km away, near the Government Kennel. "The operation involved the complete destruction of a mountain and its removal to Kellett Bay and, at the end of the operation, the respondents were to leave the borrow area as a flat area about 20m above sea level." I wonder if that was the hill that used to stand above Waterfall Bay, that we've talked about before.
- Jason Wordie's book 'Streets' explains where the name Kellett came from.
- Flickr has a couple of photos (1, 2) of Kellett Bay after Wah Fu Estate was completed, but before the bay was reclaimed.
