Kentwell's full name was Lawrence Klindt Kentwell.  Klindt was his middle name.  He was born in Hong Kong in 1882 to a Chinese mother and British father.  He soon moved to Hawaii with his mother.  

He qualified as a barrister in England in 1916 and soon moved to Shanghai. By the late 1920s he was a shrill Chinese nationalist.  He was disbarred in Shanghai in 1926.
