I saw this scratched inscription inside the top of the turret. In 2002 it was still quite readable and it read W GROTT and beneath it a date 11 4 40. Below it and to the right is HICK preceded by an initial E or L. I took several photographs of it but this is the most readable one. If you zoom in I hope that you are able to read the crude scratches. I asked Tony Banham if he knew of a W Grott who might have been in the garrison in 1940, but he couldn't find any trace of him. It is of course quite possible that Mr Grott made the inscription many years later and added his date of birth - but I prefer to think that it was a very bored squaddie! Another thought is -does the date 11 April 1940 predate the cnstruction date for these two pill boxes?
Inscription PB1 Jardines catchwater.
