Thanks for uploading this postcard. The photo for this card was taken between 1947 and 1955. The ship in the background is a British India Steam Navigation Company S class vessel – one of three built between 1947 and 1950 for their APCAR Line service between Indian, Chinese and Japanese ports.

Prior to 1955 BI passenger ships had a black hull with a narrow white band. After 1955 the livery was changed to a white hull with a black band.

M.V. SANGOLA (1947-63) Built by Barclay, Curle and Co. Ltd. Glasgow

M.V. SIRDHANA (1947-72) Built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd. Newcastle

M.V. SANTHIA (1950-66) Built by Barclay, Curle and Co. Ltd. Glasgow

The ships were almost identical and without a clearer image it is difficult spot the differences needed to make a positive identification.

A Glen Line vessel (red funnel) and a Blue Funnel vessel (blue funnel) can be seen at Holt’s Wharf.
