Flight Lieutenant Ken Sly, an Australian, was for some years the Commanding Officer at the R.A.F. Battys outpost on the Peak, with Frank Curzon as his Senior Non Commissioned Officer. During World War II, Ken was a 19 year old Lancaster pilot, flying on many operations. Later he retrained as a linguist and in the late 1970s and early 1980s he took part in some of the first trade links with China. His autobiography, 'Horse Grows Horns' documents his interesting life.

GCHQ
Ken Sly was my fathers boss at Battys Belvedere when he was posted to Hong Kong in the autumn of 1958 to help transition Battys from the RAF to GCHQ (known as CSOS). My father together with two CSOS colleagues were accommodated in Winner House, North Point and were taken to the top of the Peak daily to undertake their work. Dad quickly found an apartment to rent at 5K Bowen Road in preparation for my mothers arrival in HK on January 9th 1959. It was a highly convenient location since dad could catch the Peak Tram up to work a few yards from our front door.
