A better way to locate photos

Submitted by David on Tue, 12/30/2008 - 22:18

We've made some changes so that it's easier to give photos a location. That in turn will make it easier to search for photos that you are interested in.

What it is

If you look at a photo (the software we use to run this site calls them 'images'), you'll now see a new section 'Places shown in this photo:'. And, ta-da, it is followed by a list of the places you can see in the photo.

Similarly, if you look at a place, you'll see a new section 'Photos that show this place', which ... well, you know already.

If you enjoyed reading Martin Booth's memoir, Golden Boy (published as 'Gweilo' in some markets), here is a place to find & contribute extra information about the places and lifestyle he describes. We've divided it by chapter, so just click on the chapter you're interested in for more information.

Extra notes for contributors:

The quickest way to add some information about one of the chapters is to click on the chapter from the list below, then click the 'add new comment' link.

Looking for pillbox #72

Submitted by David on Thu, 10/02/2008 - 09:00

Monday's walk was one of those 'it's the journey, not the destination' outings. In theory I was going to find the location of pillbox 72, but in any case it was lovely weather, and a good excuse to scramble over some rocks.

The map we've been using shows pillbox 72 on the coastline, somewhere between Jubilee Battery and Kennedy Town. Last weekend we took a ferry to Lamma, so I used the chance to take some photos of this section of the coastline. It's the view as you pass through Sulphur Channel, between HK Island and Green Island.

How to get there when you don't know where to go

Last week we introduced the new Places feature. They help you find your way to a place in Hong Kong.

That's great if you know where you want to get to. But what if you've just got a vague idea? eg 'I expect to be working in Central, which serviced apartments are nearby?'. Or "I'm staying in a hotel on Nathan Road, any friendly pubs nearby?".
