He, for it was surely a man, was British (or just possibly Portuguese), worked as an Assistant at a Sugar company, lived on Hong Kong Island, and was most definitely in the minority.
I've got an idea to bring some more HK history out into the light. I can't do it alone, so I'm asking for your help.
Overview
The old Hong Kong Jurors Lists contain lots of valuable information. But, they're hidden away, and not very easy to search. We can fix those problems, and at the same time make its easier to spot new patterns in the information:
If you walk Stage 2 of the Wilson Trail, you'll see this set of wartime cooking stoves.
I finally got to visit them for the first time this week, and take a closer look. They follow the same layout as the area E we've seen before, but are in slightly better condition.
Apart from the regular blocks of 8 stoves (4 large, 4 small on each), there's one much larger stove which I hadn't noticed before. The surround is higher, and there are steps for the cook to climb up to reach the wok. You can see it in the middle foreground of this photo:
In Dr Scott's introduction to the island, he notes it "became notorious for heavy drinking, excessive gambling, wild nightlife and exotic bordellos." That makes a change from tunnels - off we went to explore!
This was an unexpected bonus. A tunnel runs into the hill opposite our hotel, and leads to an underground theatre!
