Paul Evelyn BASKETT [1884-1943]

Paul Evelyn Baskett was born in Wiltshire, England in January 1884. He began his travels in 1902 when he went to South Africa.

In 1906, he was with the Natal Carabineers as a 2/Lt., and took part in the suppression of the Zulu Rebellion. Later, he went to Johannesburg on a gold mining trip, and was transferred to the Witwater Rand Rifles with the rank of Captain.

Marciano Francisco de Paula BAPTISTA (aka Naneli) [1896-1957]

Marciano Francisco de Paula Baptista served as Company Sergeant Major 1186 in the HKVDC. He was in No. 6 (Portuguese) Light Anti-Aircraft Company.

After the fall of Hong Kong, he was interned at Sham Shui Po Camp. He organised shows in camp and was an excellent stage designer and graphic artist. He was also known as "Artista Baptista".

William O'CONNOR [1916-????]

William O' Connor was bombardier 3437 in the 2nd Battery of the HKVDC. The Battery was mobilised on 7 December 1941, the day before the Japanese attack on Hong Kong. As listed in the hongkongwardiary, he appears to have been re-assigned to the 4th Battery during the hostilities.

William O' Connor was taken prisoner-of-war and interned at Sham Shui Po Camp. He was later shipped to Nagoya POW camp. After liberation, he was repatriated to the United Kingdom.

Robert Patterson DUNLOP [1896-????]

Robert Patterson Dunlop appears in the 1927 Jurors List as an Electrical Engineer working for the Hong Kong Electric Co and resided in the company quarters at Causeway Hill. In 1940, he gave his address as 207 King's Road which was at North Point Power Station.

He was married to Edith Frida Bull. They had two children, both born in Hong Kong. 

Robert Dunlop was connected with the ARP Auxiliary and served in the HKVDC during the Battle of Hong Kong.

Joseph Hilton SHAW [1898-????]

Joseph Hilton Shaw was a Stores Superintendent at China Light & Power Co., Ltd.

He was married to Dorothy Margaret Roe. 

During the Battle of Hong Kong, he joined the HKVDC on 11 December 1941. Private Shaw was later interned at Argyle Street and Sham Shui Po Camps. His wife was interned at Stanley Camp.

William Richard Kingdon COLLINGS (aka Richard) [1904-2007]

William Richard Kingdon Collings was a Naval Architect. He joined Government as an Assistant Surveyor in the Marine Surveyor's Office of the Harbour Department (later called Marine Department) on 24 November 1933.

He married Flora Muriel Robson at St. Andrew's Church on 5 September 1936.

William Collings better known as "Richard" was a keen golfer and won many local championships. He also served in the HKVDC:

Andrew SIMPSON [1913-????]

Andrew Simpson was a civil servant attached to the H. M. Dockyard. Not sure of his actual duties but on his POW Card he held the rank of Sergeant. 

He married Francis Vera Stroud, secretary to H. M. Trade Commissioner on 29 April 1939 at the Registry.

After the fall of Hong Kong he was interned at Sham Shui Po and Argyle Street Camps. He was later shipped to Oeyama POW Camp, Osaka. His wife was interned at Stanley Camp.

Felix Maurice ELLIS [1895-1949]

Felix Maurice Ellis was a stockbroker.

He enlisted in the HKVDC in July 1940 and was a Lance Corporal (4550). After the fall of Hong Kong, he was interned at Sham Shui Po Camp. His other family members were interned at Stanley Camp.

His name is listed incorrectly in Hong Kong War Diary under HKVDC as "Felix Morris Ellis". He died in 1949 and is buried in the Jewish Cemetery at Happy Valley.

George WHITE [1899-1993]

George White was formerly the head of the Engineering Department at Plymouth Technical College, U. K. He joined the Education Department on 11 November 1932 as a technical supervisor and formulated plans for a system of technical education in Hong Kong.

He later became the Government Trade School's first principal. The School held its first courses in February 1937 and was formally opened by Governor Northcote on 13 April 1938.

In April 1941, George White was appointed Controller of Land Transport.

Thomas Fletcher STAINTON [1902-1984]

In the 1941 Jurors List, Thomas Fletcher Stainton, DCM* was a timekeeper at the Taikoo Sugar Refinery. He was also a Sergeant (3093) in the No. 2 Company (Scottish) of the HKVDC.

He married Daisy Elizabeth Minnie Wilson, nursing sister of Queen Mary Hospital at St. John's Cathedral on 23 July 1940. In 1940, he resided at No. 9 Braemar Terrace.

After the fall of Hong Kong, he was in Bowen Road Hospital and later interned at Sham Shui Po Camp. His wife was interned at Stanley Camp.
