A segment from a Crown Lands Office 1928 map of the Kai Tak area. Over time the layout in the triangle next to the airfield nullah seems to have had streets added.

Bamboo matshed Hangar fires were common before the permanent steel hangar was built for the RAF at the eastern end of the airport.

A new swimming pool was opened in 1963 due to some of the RAF's boundary areas changing as the main road system around the airport was rerouted after the opening of the new runway

There has been discussion on kite flying near Kai Tak. This newsprint describes the hazards. I hope the kite flyer did not have the twine wrapped around his hands at the time of impact! IDJ

A visit to the Kowloon City rooftop of this silk emporium entitled you to a 'Near Miss' certificate. My son tells me the proprietor was one of his KGV teachers.

Swastika Kai Tak

The swastika was not too uncommon in Hong Kong in the 1930s. At Kai Tak the Lufthansa proving flights between Berlin and Tokyo carried a swastika on the tail fin. This SCMP image is from 2 May 1939. Similar aircraft of the German-Chinese airline Eurasia also displayed the swastika for a period until the Chinese government requested their removal.
