Yau Tong Bay [Kwun Tong Tsai Wan] Development

Introduction

End of the 1950s to the early 1960s, the Hong Kong Government started a major reclamation project in Kwun Tong which is located in the south-east of the Kowloon Peninsula, opposite to the extended Kai Tak Runway. The main reasons for the development were the need for new industrial sites as well as massive creation of living space (NEW TOWN concept).

Further down south-east, next to Lei Yue Mun, is Yau Tong Bay, also named Kwun Tong Tsai Wan. It was long considered a remote and sparsely populated area. In fact it was up to the early 1950s.

Ko Chiu Road Estate [1971-c.1991]

Ko Chiu Road Estate (Chinese: 高超道邨) was a public housing estate in Ko Chiu Road, the upper hill of Yau Tong, Kwun Tong District, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

In 1964, the British Hong Kong Government announced that the estate would be named Yau Tong Bay Government Low Cost Estate (Chinese: 油塘灣政府廉租屋邨) (later Ko Chiu Road Government Low Cost Estate, Chinese: 高超道政府廉租屋邨). It consisted of 11 blocks, built between 1971 and 1973. In 1973, the estate was renamed as Ko Chiu Road Estate.

Yau Tong (Resettlement) Estate [1964-c.1998]

Yau Tong Estate was a resettlement estate with 26 blocks built in 1964, 1965 and 1971 respectively, all of which were demolished in the 1990s. The estate was originally redeveloped in phases. However, the airport relocation and MTR Tseung Kwan O line construction caused delays in the redevelopment project. In the end, nearly all blocks were demolished at one time in the late 1990s, rather than by phases.

After redevelopment, five blocks and two schools were built in 2000 and 2002.
