Wedding in Shanghai, Philip Harding Klimanek and Zoia Serjevna Kojevnikova, 1922

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today].

The Lo Yuk-Tong family house, at 17-19 Kennedy Road, was first built in 1919, and demolished near 1970. It is one of the sites that was redeveloped to build current day Hopewell Centre. The picture shows the North facing side of the house, and is taken at night when the house was lit up celebrating the marriage of the eldest grandson.

This photo was taken of Iris and Cyril Gaby just after their wedding at the Catholic Cathedral on 6th October 1934. I'm not sure if it is outside the cathedral itself. Iris must be in her "going away" clothes, as there is also a photo of her in her wedding dress on the way to her wedding. A press notice says that the honeymoon was to be spent at the Repulse Bay Hotel, so not far away! The photo comes from the Gaby family collection courtesy their chronicler, Stuart Preddy.
