Adolph Zimmern** was sent to China by Reiss & Co. when he was only 24 years old and he stayed for 6 years.  In 1867-1869 he was based in Hong Kong and 1870-1873 based in Shanghai.  I don't know his address at either place.

During that time he had four children with IP Lai Kam who was a Eursasian woman from Shanghai who had strong features.*  It is thought that her father was Scottish.    Adolph was well respected and was made a "special" juror right away in Hong Kong.  He was a partner in Reiss & Co and when based in Shanghai, joined various Municipal Councils.  When his tour of duty was up he returned to England.

It was the custom in Shanghai for children to take their father's surname.  In Hong Kong, that was not so.  But the two Zimmern boys had both Western and Chinese names - 施燦光 Adolph Zimmern , and 施炳光 Andrew Zimmern.

At least one of IP Lai Kam sons was enrolled as a boarder in the Diocesean School in Hong Kong when he was 9 years old [waiting for fact check].  It was not uncommon for parents living in Shanghai to place their children in this Hong Kong boarding school.  When her eldest daughter [who is believed to have been the protected woman of Jacob Sassoon] was 19 years old , IP Lai Kam had enough money to buy a house in Hong Kong at 30 Hollywood Road (in 1887) for $6,800.00.  It is shown on the 1901 map, and she left it to her two sons when she passed away.

Her elder son died just two years later, when he was only 34,  leaving his part to his younger brother with these words in his will (translated from Chinese):

my first wife gave birth to 3 daughters and one son.  My second wife, three sons.  My wife is still young in age, and my sons and daughters are also in tender age.  I hope that my younger brother and sister-in-law will treat them as if they are their own.

So his brother was left with the entire house - but also the care of his brother's family of 7 children and his sister-in-law.

*there is a photo of IP Lai Kam - and a different formal family portrait of the younger brother with wife and sister-in-law with many of the children -  in Eric Peter Ho's book "Tracing my Children's Lineage"

** Adolph was born in Heidleburg, Germany, and emigrated to England with one of his brother when he was just 17 years old.  On returning from China, he married a woman in Frankfurt, Germany and they settled in Surbiton, England.  One of their children grew up to become Sir Alfred Zimmern.
