Lieutenant Colonel John Monro, MC, RA (Royal Artillery), was born in 1914 and died in 1981.

Key Service Details: 

Fought in the Battle of Hong Kong (December 1941) as a Brigade Major in the Royal Artillery, escaped a Japanese POW camp, marched 1,200 miles across China, and later served in Burma. His wartime experiences are detailed in his daughter Mary Monro's memoir, Stranger in My Heart.

In February 1942 Major John Monro escaped from a POW camp in Hong Kong with two colleagues and made his way across China to the administrative capital at Chongqing.

They travelled on foot, by truck, train and boat and eventually arrived in Chongqing two months after they had left Hong Kong.

All three men were awarded the Military Cross for their bravery.

Using her Father’s diary entries and letters written at the time, John’s daughter Mary has retraced his journey.
