Sergeant Li Kim Fai joined the Royal Artillery in February 1938. He was among the first group of Hong Kong Chinese gunners enlisted.
During the Battle of Hong Kong, Li first stayed in Shek O on searchlight duties and was redeployed to Stanley Police Station manning a searchlight near a 2-pounder anti-tank gun after the Japanese had landed on Hong Kong Island on 18 December.
When the Japanese attacked Stanley in the evening of 24 December, eight out of eleven crewmembers of Li's searchlight were killed in action, when they tried to light up the incoming Japanese tankettes.
Li escaped surrender and reported to the British Army Aid Group in August 1942. He latter served the BAAG HQ throughout the war.
The new book "Hongkongers in the British Armed Forces" also covered Li's wartime experience.
