Hello everyone,
I recently came across an oil painting with an interesting history, and I am hoping someone here might be able to help me find more information about the artist.
About the painting: The painting is a landscape oil painting measuring approximately 58 x 71 cm (23" x 28"), depicting a scenic New Zealand countryside with rolling green hills, farmland and mountains in the background.
About the artist: According to the handwritten inscription on the back of the painting, it was painted by Cheung Chung Tak (張宗德?) of Hong Kong, who was 28 years old at the time. This means he was born around 1949.
Details from the back of the painting:
- Painted on 19th April 1977
- Painted in front of spectators at Auckland, Northcote, New Zealand
- Completed in just 1½ hours from a coloured photograph
- Painting price: $60.00, Frame: $33.00
- Brought to New Zealand by Peter Wright of a showroom at 73 Lorne Street, Auckland
My questions:
# Does anyone know who Cheung Chung Tak was, and whether he was a well-known artist in Hong Kong?
# Was it common in the 1970s for Hong Kong artists to travel abroad and paint in front of live audiences?
# Does anyone have records of similar paintings or exhibitions organised through 73 Lorne Street, Auckland around that period?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
