The name of A. Kirk, listed as scout master in the newspaper article reposted by moddsey in relation to the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1922 rang a bell. To my surprise, I was unable to find him in any of the normal places, not even in the Carl Smith records. It wasn't until I searched the draft of my own Warren family history that I found a reference to Allan Kirk as an employee of the Public Works Department and cited in the Rate Book reference to the remortgaging of The Towers, my late grandfather's house. My reference is as follows: "1924 December 13. The Towers, Broadwood Road is reassigned to Man Foon Hing and others per A. Kirk (Rate Book entry for 1924-25) This was Allan Kirk, an engineer with PWD – date of 1st appointment 1st January 1922. See Govt. Records for 1925 p. 176. The Land Registry date for the reassignment is given as 8 November 1924." I further speculate that Kirk may have decided to run The Towers as a boarding house. This would have been with the agreement of John Fleming of Lowe, Bingham & Matthews. The Towers had been left to LBM by Charles Warren and it needed to pay its way until successfully sold. In later years The Towers would continue to be run as a boarding house by an LBM accountant and his wife. I'd be interested to know of any other references to Allan Kirk in Hong Kong or elsewhere. I'm not aware that he was a relative of Edward Kirk. I've also never quite understood the meaning of "per" in the context of a mortgage, if someone could explain that please.
