Charles Stanley Olson was the youngest of the four sons of John and Annie Olson. After leaving their other three sons at St John's College, Southsea, Portsmouth, they took him with them during a long absence from England that included a return to Hong Kong in 1921. Referred to as "Tubby" in the family memoir, he spent his early career with Unilever in the Gold Coast before the 2nd World War. He returned to Britain to join the RAF. His plane was shot down by a German night fighter near Raalte, Holland in June 1943. There were no survivors. He was married to Aileen O’Connor, who eventually returned to her family in Ireland. They had a son, John, also known as Sean. In the above family photograph taken in 1916 or 1917, before all the cousins dispersed, "Tubby" is seated on the proper left of his aunt Nellie at the front of the picture, who is gazing at her own son, known as "Sonny Boy." The above information is due to Sean Olson and his family memoir, "The Hong Kong Legacy." The photograph was sent to me during the course of his research, in case I could identify my own relatives, who indeed included my father and my uncle.
