The name of Ching Ah Fung, baptised at the To Tsai church as Ellen Olson by the Reverend Ost in 1891 was transcribed by Carl Smith as Au Chung Ah-Fung. Ching Ah Fung, spelt also as Cheng Ah Fung, is given as the mother of Elizabeth, John, Ellen and Charles Olson on their birth certificates. She was stepmother of Hannah Warren, (née Olson). Ching Ah Fung was the second of John Olson's wives and was styled "Mrs Olson" after her baptism. There are no authenticated photographs of her. Ching Ah Fung lived with John Olson first at the National Hotel, then 1 Ladder Street Terrace, 33 Caine Road and finally 98a Wanchai Road. She died at "Merville", 161 Wanchai Road which was the house of Mrs. L. M. Murray. She predeceased John Olson and is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in the same section as him and as her daughter, Elizabeth Warnes, who only survived her by two years.
NOTE: Carl Smith's reference to John Olson's wife as Au Chung Ah-Fung is given in “Abandoned into Prosperity: Women on the Fringe of Expatriate Society” in Merchants’ Daughters, ed. Helen F. Siu, HKUP, 2010, p. 308, n. 55.
