“Fred Brown” was a long-term resident of Stanley, and something of a local identity in the neighbourhood. He was a gentle, nature-loving, amateur botanist who seemed to be quite content living a life devoid of any of the conspicuous trappings of material “success”. I first became aware of him during the late 1950’s when my family move to live on the northern edge of Stanley Main Beach; and I would often notice him having his regular early morning swims there. He walked just about everywhere, and I never saw him riding in any private motor vehicle. When we became Ma Hang neighbours in the very early 1970’s, I sometimes took the commuter bus into Central with him. I believe that he was locally employed by a Chinese import/export firm, which utilized his European language skills. His spartan tastes perhaps reflected, in part, his lack of expatriate perks of the day. Most weekends he would be rambling around the hills of Hong Kong Island, returning home to his Ma Hang bungalow in the late afternoon with posies of seasonal wildflowers to give to his friends and neighbours. I don’t know what became of him after I left Stanley in mid-1971, but perhaps some in the Gwulo Community, who were residents of Stanley at the time, might have their own memories of “Fred Brown”.
