In 1939, Arthur Robert Thompson managed Gingles (Wanchai)

An "Arthur Thompson" appears in 1945 upon his return to the United States in September that year.

One of the liberated Navy personnel is Chief of Commissary Stores, Arthur Thompson, who had retired to the Fleet Reserve and was running the London Cafe near the waterfront at Hong Kong when the war started

I think he is the same fellow and would have known E. P. Sammons and E. F. Gingle, all being ex-U. S. Navy personnel and guaranteed out of Stanley Camp.
