videos about Hong Kong 1930s : look back from 2020s

Submitted by hkspace_wl on

Topical documentaries about 1930s Hong Kong appear not common in the public domain.
The 'Historical Time and Space' (歷史時空) facebook hosted by the late Wai Tse have shared few informative ones, with own annotation, enhancements and present day photos.
Possibly, some of them he acquired from overseas ? They appear not generally available on youtube before he shared on FB posts.

  - movie with street scenes and shop signs in Hong Kong 1936 - covering Central, Wanchai, Yaumati etc
  - movie in colour film of Hong Kong 1937, including a long section on the dragon procession re KGVI's coronation
  - movie of city 1ife in HK 1936 (*) e.g. picturesque Oriental costumes (from 9'10"); teeming native quarter : with places like Hollywood Road, 'Dai Tat Dei' at around 12'30"

Carefully viewed, they could be alternatives to directories and documents to know more about that history and time frame.

a try around the Wing On locale
In comparison with the film Soldier of Fortune (e.g. 1080 HD), I could find that three shops next to Wing On Company had remained the same for 1936 to 1955 period.
You may refer to the film still of philk here.

The more famous one is Chu Kwong Lan, a China - Southeast Asia group of shops which sold tobacco, wines, SEA foodstuff etc. [1]
The two smaller ones are 'deparment stores' of those days, which sell all kinds ('hundreds' 百) of goods (貨). [2] In fact, there might be few more there.
In the 1950s, there were still numbers e.g. 229, 231 on Des Voeux Road Central.
But by today some of these seem 'absorbed'. On the outside wall of Wing On main store entrance, you could see "209-211" put there. Next no. to the west is 237.

notes
1. early on a 1925 directory, an entry of Chu Kwong Lan could be found already
2. as early as in 1920s photos, we may see traces of such 'department stores'; may be earlier

(*) some overlap in content with the 1st movie
