Dear all,
I’m a PhD student researching the development of Hong Kong’s colonial-era water infrastructure, with a specific focus on the Kowloon Waterworks Gravitation Scheme. One of the earliest components of this scheme, the Kowloon Tong Service Reservoir (constructed in 1903), was built by a local firm called Tung Shing Construction Co. (同盛建築公司).
Despite extensive archival searches in government reports, local newspapers, and academic databases, I’ve found very little detailed information on this company. According to scattered sources, Tung Shing Construction Co. was founded by Ng Tze-chor (吳子楚) and Ng Tze-mei (吳子美), two brothers originally from Nga Tsin Wai Village (衙前圍村) who later relocated to Sha Tin around the late 1920s.
I'm particularly interested in:
- Any records, projects, or buildings attributed to Tung Shing Construction Co.
- Biographical details of Ng Tze-chor and Ng Tze-mei, especially their education, career path, or community involvement
- Possible connections between the company and other waterworks or infrastructure projects
- Leads on where to find company records (archives, land registries, directories, etc.)
If you have come across any mentions of this firm or the Ng brothers in your research—or if you know which archives or local associations might hold relevant materials—I would be incredibly grateful for your advice.
