Names

“Because expatriates found themselves Chinese ‘wives’, the children born illegitimately could choose to take either the father’s western surname or the mother’s Chinese name, which meant there were many ‘aliases’. In Hong Kong Eurasians usually adopted their mother’s Chinese name – the reverse of the case in Shanghai.”
Joyce Symons Looking at the Stars

“It’s not what you know but who you know.”
Old Adage

“Whether you used the name Hall or Sin/Sinn, really depended on circumstances, whether it was less embarrassing being Caucasian or Chinese”
Hall, In the Web

It is apparent that Mum noted most people that she met in her diary, including names upon first meetings, often correcting spellings later. The number of ‘hits’ names gets in this index gives some idea of her most important family and friends, and those whom she most associated with, however, it must be remembered that her diary entries are quite patchy and incomplete (see calendars at the beginning of each year). She had a habit of giving family members nicknames e.g. her sister Hazel was Jo and youngest brother Robert she called Robin or Sonny. The identity (surnames) of some frequently occurring persons I have been unable to establish including; Bill (f), Cham (f), boyfriend and causer of much angst David. Also Lara, Madame (Mme), Margaret, Marjorie, Maple and Tubby.

Many names occurring early on, prior to the outbreak of war Christmas 1941, are Mum’s fellow university students. Following this, with the death or imprisonment of all who fought against the Japanese, and the incarceration of all British civilians in Stanley camp, names occurring tend to be those not deemed enemy by the Japanese i.e. Eurasians not in uniform, Norwegians, Italians and Portuguese. Many Eurasians continued to engage in resistance activities, and, like Mum’s Uncle Jimmy and Uncle George, were executed, or like Dorothy Lee and Boris Pasco incarcerated for periods of time by the Kempeitai. Those of means, including eventually the Lang’s and Eddie Gosano, escaped to Macau. Many of the Chinese fled to Mainland China, and many dependents of those incarcerated, without any income, were interned in Rosehill Camp.

Following the Japanese surrender, August 1945, Mum’s Diary fills with the names of American sailors (Jack Kruse among them), British soldiers and civilians and family acquaintances recently released from Stanley and Shamshuipo pow camps. Diocesans Girls School reopens, where Mum teaches and boards, and the names of staff and students regularly crop up. My Mum left for the UK April 1946, after which English names – many of them Dad’s friends and relatives, fill her diary, although a close knit Eurasian community of family and friends from HK, recently moved to London, ensures many of the same names continue to occur, Joyce Symons was on the same boat as Mum, and Mum’s sister Jo (Hazel) and Eddie Gosano sailed to London a few months earlier. The Kotwalls, Broadbridges and the Churns also moved to London for periods of time. Mum consistently, throughout the period covered by her diary (and throughout her life) continued to teach both English and Cantonese, and her student’s names, both adult and children, occur regularly.

Notes on index entries:

  • Listings in italics are not from my Mum’s Diary or letters, but from editors notes.
  • Some entries are not by surname but by the name my Mum uses in her diary e.g. Mary Camiard is listed under Mary, and Connie Kotewall under Connie.
  • Page numbers bolded indicate where to go for main sources of information.
  • ? is used when there is uncertainty as to spelling, or some question as to if entries are the same person.
  • (m) - male
  • (f) - female
  • gf - girlfriend
  • letter - entry is from a letter
  • photo. - photo. of the person is included
  • UK - entry is after my mother’s move to the UK (unless this is otherwise obvious). Mum continued regular letter correspondence with a few overseas friends once she moved to the UK e.g. Jack Kruse.
  • KIA - killed in action

The following is a list of notable Eurasian families from Peter Halls book In the Web – asterisks indicate those mentioned in Mum’s Diary, check the People index below to locate them.

Ablong*, Ahwee, Anderson*, Baker*/Bottomley/Fenton*, Belilios/Choa*, Broadbridge*, Chater, Cheung*, Choa*, Churn*, Cunningham, Ford, Frith, Gittins/Greaves*, Grose, Ho Fook, Ho Tung*, Hopwar, Hung*/Lebedev*, Hung*, Kew*, Kotwaj*, Kotewall*, Lang/Laing*, Lyson, Lowcock*, Overbeck/Ray, Randall*/Oei/Coffey, Rapp, Ryrie, Shea*, Talbot*, Tyson/Chan*/Bardo, Walkinshaw, Wong Kam Fuk, Young Saye, Zimmern*

The Choas, Kotewalls, Lowcocks and Zimmerns were all closely inter-related prominent Eurasian families. Genealogies for all these are available in Peter Hall’s In The Web and four genealogies: Lang/Laing, Paterson, Kotewall and Ahlmann have been included in Being Eurasian. The Kotwall genealogy was not included in In the Web – perhaps the family was not considered a notable Eurasian family, being Parsee.
