Current condition
Demolished / No longer exists

Formerly at 100-108 Kennedy Road above Stone Nullah Lane and the Pak Tai Temple, Wanchai. Current complex is the St. James Settlement.

Appears to have been established around 1900/01. Mention was made in the photo section of the Sunday Herald dated 15 March 1931 that the laundry was considered to be the oldest of its kind in Hong Kong having had long term contracts with different units of the British Army.

The buildings on this site are shown on several of the overlay maps:

They are also mentioned in item 90 on page F8 of the Blue Book for 1911. It is part of the chapter that lists "Crown Property, (Buildings), Hong Kong, 1911".

  • Item 90

    • Name of Building: 10 Public Laundries, Wantsai
    • Name and Titles of Occupiers: Washermen
    • Nature of Occupation: Washhouses and Dwellings, 10
    • Commencement of Occupation: June, 1892
    • Remarks: Under Control of Sanitary Department. Rent raised to $23 per month each from 1st April, 1910.

It looks as though the laundries were built to house multiple tenants, though I don't know if, by the time of the 1931 photo, Luk Cheong were still just one of several tenants, or if they'd taken over the whole site.
