Originally planned for power transmission, the building was repurposed to include the headquarters of Hong Kong Electric during the construction phase. The top level of the building served as a substation whilst the lower layer provided office space and a carpark. See M+ here and here
It is estimated that the building was gradually demolished from 1995 onwards for the construction of Hong Kong Electric Centre. The new headquarters building was completed in 2001. See Hong Kong Engineer Vol. 29, December 2001 here
