Why did the China Products stores vanish after 1997? There was a multi-storey store in Central, another in North Point and several others elsewhere. They all stocked a big variety of goods: clothing, sweets, bales of raw silk plain & coloured. Yet only the North Point Store, greatly reduced in size was there when last I explored HK & Kowloon in November 2007.
Does any Gwulo member remember why they closed? Shops selling luxury items remained, bt not the China Products stores,
Yue Wah
Hi there,
There are still Yue Wah around, which was among the first such store chains re-branded themselves as a Department Store, despite they are still selling primarily China Products.
I seem to have an impression that some such stores folded even before 1997, like 新中華 in Wanchai, as well as various 中橋stores on Kowloon side. Yue Wah & Wah Fung has smaller branches selling off the counter Chinese Medicine and\or Tea around still.
