Wu Tai-piao was a renowned doctor specializing in the treatment of tuberculosis. Wu graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1928 and served as President of the Hong Kong Medical Association (Formerly Hong Kong Chinese Medical Association) from 1955 to 1957.
Wu Tai-piao was the owner of Villa Ellenbud from the 1940s to 1970s. He purchased both mansions at No. 50 and No. 52 Sassoon Road, Pok Fu Lam together for HK$13,500 in 1940. The house at No. 52 was previously owned by the London Missionary Society. The green exterior wall of No. 52 still retains the emblem of the London Missionary Society and was once used as a nurses' dormitory in the early years.
Wu Tai-piao was born in 1904 in Java, Indonesia. His father was a businessman who moved from Fujian to Southeast Asia to seek a livelihood. The Wu family was so wealthy that they were able to purchase both mansions with cash at that time. After Wu Tai-piao's death in 1972, the properties were transferred to his only daughter.
