Project Concern was founded by Dr. James W. Turpin in 1961. It is a charity medical organisation devoted to help poor Chinese in Hong Kong. In 1962, the first clinic began operation in the Kowloon Walled City. 1963 the floating clinic officially opened inside the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter. The ship (a rebuilt Chinese junk) was named "Yauh Oi" which means "Brotherly Love". It looks that in 1965 a sister ship was added.
In an article published in 2019, the author George A. Kellogg refers:
An average of 150 patients come each day. Unless penniless, they are charged 50 cents Hong Kong money (8 cents U.S.). "With no charge." says Dr. Turpin, "they would be apt to think the drugs of no value and not take them." Little do they realize that they frequently are given drugs with a value of $2-10 in U.S. money.
Couldn’t find out when the floating clinic ceased operation.
