“MRS. HANNA SCOTT

---------------

Buried At Jewish Cemetery

------------------

The distressing motor accident in Johnston Road on Thursday night when Mrs. Hanna Scott was killed as the result of being thrown from a side-car attached to the motor cycle driven by Mr. E. Mitford at the time, had its sequel at the Jewish Cemetery last evening when the lady was buried under Jewish rites, Rabbi Eleazer officiating.

It will be recalled that the lady was thrown from the side-car when the cycle overturned and despite all that was done for her she died on the way to the hospital.

There was a large number of friends at the funeral amongst those being noticed were Messrs. E.M. Raymond, E. Mitford, H.R. Latham, J. Landau, A. Goldenberg, W. Goldenberg, Mrs. Weill, Mr. and Mrs. Bogdatsky, Mr. E. Joseph, Rev. B. Lenge and many others.

Floral tributes were sent by Jimmy, Pal, Peggy O’Neill, Alexandre Beauty Parlour (where the deceased was employed) Mrs. See Kee and many others.

A particularly sad feature is the fact that the deceased who was 26 years of age, had been in the Colony for only a few months but during that short space of time had made a large number of friends.”

Well done, David! Are you related to Hannah? Not related to this site... I started looking into her brother, who was also a ladies' hairdresser. He and his wife are buried in Rookwood Cemetery near Sydney. I haven't found anything yet on where her late husband is buried. Both Hannah and Glenn James died quite young.

Hi howzend! No, I'm not related to Hannah. I have a lot of family history linked to HK and the Chinese Treaty Ports so I often peruse a lot of the newspapers as part of my research. I'll post stuff I find interesting or could potentially be of use for others esp individuals who had a transient link to HK which may be a 'brick wall' for others researching their family history.

James Glenn Scott - I have his death certificate. Born 1901. His father was Thomas Scott (real full name was James Thomas Scott 1872-1935). He was tragically found dead by suicide by hanging by the neck on 14th May 1931 in the County Jail, Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa, USA.

He was a salesman in the previous 3 years and last worked in April 1931. He was listed as residing at Minneapolis, Minnesota at the time of his death. Interestingly his wife was called 'Eve Scott'. He was buried in Minneapolis on 16th May 1931.

His grave is located at Grave 66, Row 109, Section PG21, Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota, USA

Yes, I found the newspaper report of his death, all because he cashed a bad cheque for US$15. I also found his file with the railroad company he worked for. He seemed to float around from job to job but it was during the Great Depression and I'm sure money was tight. He might have had better luck had they stayed in Shanghai.

As for his wife being named as "Eve", that's an interesting one. "Eve" in Hebrew is "Chava" while "Hanna" is Hebrew is "Chana". If Hanna had gone by Chana and there was a transcription error resulting in someone writing Chava, it would still be a stretch for a non-Jew to figure out that Chava is Eve (unless they read the Bible in Hebrew).
