This is a large book, showing a collection of maps and aerial photos of Hong Kong over the years. It has been a trusty companion whenever I've been trying to work out the location of an old photograph or an old building for Gwulo, and even though an increasing number of old Hong Kong maps are available online, I still reach for this book on a regular basis.
The book was compiled by Hal Empson, and published in 1992 by Hong Kong's Government Information Services. Sadly the book has been out of print for many years, but I still hope that one day we'll see it reprinted. Many years of use mean my copy is starting to break apart, so I'd certainly welcome the chance to buy a new one.
1992-2002 : The 30th anniversary
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Mapping Hong Kong, Wattis Fine Art on Hollywood Road are currently running an exhibition of maps that appear in, or are otherwise connected with the book. Their 34th annual Mapping of Asia Exhibition runs until 14th January 2023, and is open Monday - Saturday, 12 – 6pm. You'll find them on Hollywood Road: view map of their location.
If you're not able to visit, Annemarie Evans recently called in to the gallery to chat with Jonathan Wattis about the exhibits and their stories for her Hong Kong Heritage show. You can listen to a recording of their conversation.
