The word Sheiling means a hut, or collection of huts, temporarily occupied by shepherds whilst their flocks graze high ground during the warmer months of the year.

The house named The Sheiling was built on RBL 9 which was put up for public auction on 17 March 1879 (Government Notification 56/1879) with a requirement to build a substantial building within one year. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to find the result of the auction. The earliest evidence I’ve seen of the existence of a building on RBL 9 comes from the 1886/7 Peak Rates Book, which records that an unnamed bungalow stood on RBL 9, its address was No.22 The Peak and J.G. Smith was the Rate Payer.

The Ladies and Peak Directories of 1887 and 1888 list the Smith’s still at The Sheiling, but the 1889 Peak Directory shows Rev. W. Jennings thereat. The 1889 Peak Directory, published in January 1889, is the latest mention of The Sheiling I’ve found before its replacement by Stewart Terrace. The HK Daily Press of 12 June 1890 advertised No.’s 7, 8 & 9 Stewart Terrace for rent, so The Sheiling must have been demolished before then.

To summarize, The Sheiling was built at sometime between 17 March 1879 and 1886. It was demolished and replaced by Stewart Terrace sometime between early 1889 and early 1890.
