Is the gorge still there?  I think that must be Mt Butler behind the Tiger Balm garden.

Did you mean the one east of the high wall?

That is what we called "Tai Hang" (Big Stream"), it's behind the gate. Some hikers still venture along that stream and the paths of the ruins of the squatters area (now hidden in the forest). The entrance to those ruins is the stairs east of the stream in this street view.

Here's a view of the ruins of the squatters area ...

Looking north towards Tai Hang Rd... going further upstream, it's still untouched except for the weirs built decades ago.

Hi,

No, The gorge to which Jack referred must have been the one that contained the stream that was used as a laundry.  There are several other images in the 367 gallery that show the laundries, one being called the Electric(!) Laundry, with washing hanging out on the hillside above the stream in an area that in the 1950s became heavily covered with squatters huts.  In this photograph taken by Jack Cubitt in 1946, possibly from the pagoda, part of the gorge is just visible at centre right, with the stream going under the Tai Hang Road's bend. The white dots on the slopes of the hill would be the sheets and other washing spread out to dry. Later in the mid 1950s, when I was there, that is where the squatters huts would be.  Interesting to see the remains of their foundations on the images that you have uploaded. Regards Andrew
