I believe the marker stone was part of the footpath route number system from the 1970s. Peel Rise was marked as Route 25 and Aberdeen Reservoir Road was marked as Route 26.
The marker stone has three side. "<- 25 ->" faces west side which should be indicating Peel Rise as Route 25. "<- 261" and "261 ->" both point towards the catchwater. The path along the catchwater should be a branch of Route 26 (Aberdeen Reservoir Road).
