I am looking for information about my great-grandmother, Lily Yuk-hing Lai (1870-1945), wife of Sir Ho Kai (1859-1914).  Sources such as birth certificate, marriage certificate (1885), newspaper wedding announcement, newspaper obituary would be appreciated.

She may have been the brother of Kenneth Stephen Knight and child of Francis Parkman Knight (1831-1880), an American consular officer in China.

Thank you.

Alfred Wen

Search the Carl Smith Cards for "ho kai"

She was a benefactor of the Hop Yat Church.

See also info about the Alice Hospital endowed by Ho Kai and its associated Chinese church ToTsing Church.

Contacting the church regarding Ho Kai's second marriage since the couple were so important.  Call them up and see if they have a historian who can help.

Descendents may still attend the church.

Hi Alfred,

We might be distant relatives as my great grandfather and your great grandmother I trust were siblings. I have heard stories from relatives that my great grandfather's sister was Sir Ho Kai's wife. My great grandfather's Chinese name is Lai Kam-Fat or Kim Frederique Lay (Formerly "Knight"). We do have distant relatives carrying the 'Knight' surname. Met one before named Horace Knight, a nearly old man, who came to my grandfather's funeral 20+ years ago claiming to be a cousin of my grandfather...

Hello Aaron,

I am sure we are related.  Through Gwulo and Ancestry.com DNA matching I have found other Knights descendant from Kam-Shing Lai (aka Kenneth Stephen Knight) and Kam-Fat’s older brother as well as a Lucy Knight Ozorio (b1868) another of their siblings together and her descendants - all siblings of my great grandmother Lily Yuk-Hing Lai.

We have a group of cousins both distant and close, some newly discovered like yourself, sharing information via email and trying to a find documentary link to who we all believe to be the siblings father - Francis Parkman Knight (1831-1880) - an American consul in China from 1862+/- until his death in Shanghai.

If you have any info about him that would be great.

Our names and contacts for Kam-Fat’s descendents only extends to his grandchildren.  You are fhe only great grandchild I have heard from or anyone of our research group has been able to locate.

Of Kam-Fat’s children we know of 3 - George, Sim-Lai, and William.

Of George’s children we have Anne, Elizabeth, Eugene, Frank, Patricia and Peter.

Of William’s children we have Evelyn, Nancy and Thomas.

Nothing for Sum-Lai.

If you can identify which if any are your parent, that would be great.

The text window closed prematurely.  If you wish, I can introduce you to the online group of cousins.  Contact me directly at aywen@ksaarchitects.com.  I am in NYC.

Look forward to hearing more from you.

Best,

Alfred Wen

Hi Annelise / Alfred,

I tried going into the "geni" link but I'm lost and not sure how to update it.

I'm 47 (turning 48 in December) and I never knew my great great grandfather Francis Parkman Knight only until now. My knowledge of my ancestry further back are still pretty new. But I could try and help with the names of the great grandchildren (my cousins) of Lay Kam-Fat if that helps.
