The Old Wong Nai Chung Gap police station no longer stands today, it was demolished post WW2 to make way for a private residence, which is now one of Stanley Ho's houses.
This Police Station was a pivotal structure that controlled Wong Nai Chung gap, and thus Hong Kong Island. It was situated on the 4-way crossroads that led to all 4 quarters of the Island. This effectively was the commanding structure of the battle of Wong Nai Chung gap; whoever held it, held the gap.
It was occupied by Hong Kong Police and the Hong Kong military garrison during the Battle of Wong Nai Chung gap, during December 19, 1941. In the Battle of Hong Kong. The station was attacked like the rest of the defensive structures on the Gap, Including West Brigade HQ.
Hong Kong War Diary Quote:
Enemy rushed Wong Nei Chung Gap and Police Station Knoll. Message to Field, "Enemy massed below Police Station in Gap." Field opened fire with great accuracy despite poor visibility, target being in the shadow. Enemy again caught 'en masse' and casualties heavy.
The London Gazette Article Quote:
- [19 December] 07.30am. The Japanese take the police station at Wong Nai Chung Gap. They then attack up the hill (Parkview Road) towards Stanley Gap and Lieutenant E. L. Mitchell's platoon of Winnipeg Grenadiers together with two sections from No. 3 Company under the popular Lieutenant D. J. Anderson. Pgs. 130-1.
As shown in these quotes. The Japanese took the station and garrisoned it, winning the Battle of Wong Nai Chung Gap and able to successfully defend against counterattacks. The station was used by the Japanese Kempeitai during the occupation period.
