Work on the hilltop Radio-Sonde Station was expected to be completed by April 1951. The site consisted of offices, laboratories, stores, caretaker's quarters and a balloon-filling shed. To avoid the high cost of an approach road to the site, a cable railway was provided to hoist gas cylinders up the hillside from a loading bay about 100 feet below the Station.
