At outbreak of war Edmondston was Hong Kong Manager of the HKSBC and Grayburn's most likely successor as Chief Manager.
He was one of those bankers kept outside of Stanley for Japanese purposes. In town he took part in illegal fund-raising to help those in the Camps and also commuunicated with the British Army Aid Group . He was arrested on May 24, 1943 and eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison. He died of malnutrition and medical neglect.
