Hi everyone,
I am trying to identify the exact location where this photograph was taken during the 1967 Hong Kong riots.
The photograph shows a man being arrested by police in an industrial area of Kowloon.
My current hypothesis is that the photograph may have been taken around 11 May 1967, in San Po Kong, possibly around Tai Yau Street. However, this is only a working hypothesis and none of these details is certain. I am hoping that someone familiar with the historical area, or with the 1967 photographs, can help confirm or correct this.
I have been researching the photograph for some time and have compared:
- contemporary reports of the 1967 riots;
- historical photographs of the area;
- the street layout around Tai Yau Street, San Chuk Street and the surrounding industrial streets;
- surviving buildings and older photographs.
One possible lead concerns the Hongkong Artificial Flower Works, which contemporary sources place in the Tai Yau Street area. However, this is only part of my working hypothesis, not a confirmed identification of the location of the photograph. I am not primarily trying to identify the factory; I am trying to determine where the photographer was standing when this particular photograph was taken.
If the photograph is indeed connected with the events around the Hongkong Artificial Flower Works, contemporary descriptions indicate that the main entrance of the factory faced Tai Yau Street, while workers and demonstrators were also gathering in the rear area. Police subsequently entered Tai Yau Street from both ends and the confrontation took place in front of the factory.
But again, I am not certain that this is the scene shown in the photograph, and I would very much like to have this hypothesis challenged if the visual evidence points elsewhere.
I am particularly interested in:
1. the exact street and position of the photographer;
2. the direction in which the camera was facing;
3. any identifiable building visible in the background;
4. whether the same location appears in other photographs from the same day or incident.
I have already spent considerable time comparing the possible location with the present-day street layout, so I am specifically looking for historical/local knowledge that could identify the viewpoint — or establish that my current hypothesis is wrong.
Any identification, even if tentative, would be very useful, especially if it can be supported by another historical photograph, map or building identification.
Thanks a lot in advance! 🙏🙏
32 Tai Yau Street
This photo was probably taken outside 32 Tai Yau Street, facing north. The same industrial building is showing on the left of a photo below. It was claimed to be taken on 6 May 1967 during a labour protest of Hong Kong Artificial Flower Works at 33 Tai Yau Street on the right of the photo.

32 Tai Yau Street was demolished in about 1990, but the Standard Industrial Building at 22-26 Tai Yau Street to the right of it in the photo is still existing.
1967 Map of Tai Yau Street
The red cross on the map should be where the photographer of your photo was standing, and the green cross should be where the photo I shared was taken.
Re: Main Photo
The event date, 6 May 1967 mentioned above is correct.
