The vessel Anita in HK 1843-1845

Submitted by Bob Kerr on

The Sydney registered (Dec 1841) Vessel Anita was reported arriving in Hong Kong 19 October 1843.  It had be reported early as being for sale in Canton.

The Anita is recorded as arriving in Australia in Dec 1845 from Hong Kong, and sold on 23 December 1845.  The seller's name is that of a Sydney Merchant.

There is no evidence of Anita ever visiting Australia following the 19 Oct arrival in HK until its Dec 1845 arrival in Sydney.

Is there any documentation that lists Shipping movements in / out of HK in the period of my interest (1843-1845); Port Authority documents, Newspapers, being 2 that immediately come to mind?

Thank you for your time and attention.

Below are some sample entries found on the Friend of China, as issued by the Harbour Master William Pedder.

I think Hews and King are the captain of Anita in turn.
Hope above information may help a bit.  Thanks to Klaus also.

(+) put under Russell & Co., while Oct. 16 issue put it under Jardine Matheson & Co.

Thank you to all for this information.

Do I have a website available I can access to see Pedder's daily reports in digital form (e.g. the 2 dates mentioned above)?  Otherwise, I may have a reason for a holiday in HK.

Mind you, the information these posts provide don't nicely fit with the Anita information extracted from our online historical newspaper archive.

Hi, I try to jot down two alternative ways to access the gazette info published.

  1. by year, the Gazette is listed on a webpage of its own

e.g. 1845-9-20 one is under this  (refer to pg 3)   *quirk* may need to press this link two times

  2. expressed as a query, you may get all possible matches in 1843-1845 via this, sort by Accession No. appears to show them in proper date order
