CLP Generation Fuel Mix (1960s–2025)

1960s: Hok Un Power Station was primarily reliant on imported fuel oil . The ratio of coal was negligible until later developments.

1980s (The Coal Era): CLP commissioned the Castle Peak Power Station , shifting the primary generation fuel from oil to coal . Coal grew to dominate more than 50% to 70% of the fuel mix over the next two decades .

2002–2015: Coal continued to comprise an average of roughly 74.3% of the thermal generation .

2020: The commissioning of the D1 gas-fired generating unit at Black Point Power Station caused the coal ratio to plunge . Natural gas jumped to roughly 50% of the total mix , while coal dropped significantly .

2025: CLP Power's local fuel mix consisted of 51% Natural Gas, 35% Non-carbon sources (including imported nuclear and renewables), 13% Coal, and 1% Others.
