New Public Piers were constructed an Ping Chau, Mirs Bay and Yung Chue Wan on Lamma Island, where at Silver Mine Bay an additional 500 feet of seawall and a small reclamation were completed, providing better berthing facilities for passenger and vehicle ferries and other vessels.
The Yung Shue Wan Public Pier opened in 1964, but the facilities are very rudimentary, the piers are narrow and lack lighting and complete equipment, which is not enough to cope with the large number of tourists.
In the early 1980s, the Government decided to improve and reconstruct the pier.
The new Yung Shue Wan Ferry Pier opened on 4 September 1987.
This pier is in the first phase of improvement plan which started back in 2022. When I was on Lamma in late 2025, it was still work in progress. The works was about the corridor/public pier section towards the actual ferry pier in use where the parking space for bicycles had been relocated and a new corridor was being built side by side along the existing one. Don't know if it is completed already.
