Information on St Francis Street 3floor house (Wanchai)

Submitted by pietro on

Hello,

I would like some more information on this house, located on St Francis Street 8, in Wanchai.

Is this considered a tong lau ? Do you know the year that it was built?

Attached the terrazzo stairs and tile flooring and brick wall detail.

Any new information is welcome!

Hi Pietro, welcome to gwulo. There doesn't seem to be a construction date for the house (and its two neighbours #10 & #12) which usually means it is pre-war. Three-storey buildings in HK in general are usually pre-war. Phil

The newspaper, China Mail dated 14 February 1890, has a small paragraph:

A fire occurred this afternoon in the dwelling house No. 8 St. Francis Street, but as the steam fire engine now stationed in Albany Street was soon on the spot, very little damage was done. The fire originated in a Chinese shop on the ground floor and spread to the cook-houses at the back before it was got under.

So it looks like the building was around in the late Victorian era.
