Morning Post Flats
I lived in the Morning Post flats from 1958 til about 1963-64. Although by that time, a more modern low-rise apartment block had been built on the western half. Sounds like they often carved off half the old colonial buildings to build new structures.
The old flats and the more modern annex were both demolished in 1963-64 to make way for the new Morning Post flats in what became 7 Bowen Road, or Viewpoint.
re: Morning Post Flats
Thanks for the extra detail. I've updated the demolition date from c.1970 to c.1964.
6 Bowen Road, Hong Kong
We lived in 6 Bowen Road immediately after the end of the Japanese Occupation. The building had two floors and was subdivided into four flats. We lived in the bottom right flat. (Apparently, Stephen and Jane Hutcheon lived in that building shortly after we left.) The owner of the building was an American called Ellis who was furious that we had moved in so quickly after the Occupation, and had acquired squatters' rights, so we did not have to pay him any rent! After about four years, we came to an agreement and left the property, and moved to Kowloon. The site is now occupied by a large apartment building, and its address is 2 Bowen Road. Number 6 is now a site which is below Bowen Road, whereas the old building was high above Bowen Road, and was reached by a large flight of steps. Incidentally, the white rectangle on the left of the main building was the old servants' quarters, which was built into the hill behind.
"Kyoomville" in 1938
Annelise has found the building was named Kyoomville in the 1938 Street Index:
