Moddsey's 1938 photo looks different to ours with an extra structure behind the beach. Barriers? The handwritten 1938 date on the back of our photo from the family album may have been a guesstimate. It was the year my Warren cousins left Hong Kong aged 12 and 13. The correct date of our photo would therefore have been earlier rather than later, if incorrect.
I think I can answer my own question by comparing our photo with moddsey’s later one. The circular formations were “beds” that had been prepared for trees that can be seen growing out of each one in moddsey’s photo, (though with not much foliage) behind the new barriers.
