St. Francis of Assisi Church (built 1955) 1956
St. Francis of Assisi Church - a 1956 ground view from the north. The church building was only one year old when this photo was taken. Just behind the wall, there was a flower and shrub garden, and later they built a classroom annex on it and relocated the entrance a short distance to the left (east).
In 1957 when I attended evening English language class in the church (they had very few classrooms), some of the remnants of the demolished shanty village were still there. Before my class started, I crossed the road to walk among these remnants. The huts to the right were still standing, but no sign of people living there. The sky was dark giving me a eerie feeling.
To prevent people from setting roadside stands outside the church, they hired "walk man" to patrol around the building during the day and evening.
