Shown on 1896 Kowloon map, located on ML 35.

The coal/briquette works were just to the south of the oil/petrol storage tanks on the same large marine lot (the latter were destroyed in WW2).

The Hongkong Daily Press of 1893-04-04 refers:

In a few days the works at Kowloon erected by the Société Francaise des Charbonnages du Tonkin for the manufacture of briquettes, or coal bricks, out of the dust coal from Hongay [coal mining area in Vietnam] will be in full working order and commence the production of this class of fuel. The prospect for the undertaking is very hopeful in any case, for though the cost of pitch is comparatively high, the profit on the fuel will be considerable. Most fortunately for the Company, however, a new process has been invented which is much less expensive, and as it is patented by the same firm that has supplied the machinery at Kowloon it can be readily substituted, the existing plant being suitable;  and the only difference being in the binding material.

The China Mail of 1893-06-29 refers:

The briquettes manufactured in Kowloon by the Charbonnages Company have been used for nearly a week at the Peak Tramway Station and have given satisfaction.
